So What Exactly Is Health Literacy?

What Exactly Is Health Literacy?

You probably use health information every day. But how do you know what to trust?

Simply Put:

Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, evaluate, and use health information to make informed decisions!

Health literacy = Find it  + Understand it  + Use it

What does that look like?

Health literacy can mean knowing how to:

  • Understand information from a doctor
  • Find trustworthy health information online
  • Recognize misleading health claims
  • Understand medication or nutrition information
  • Know when to ask for help

Health literacy helps you ask:

🔎 Who created this information?
📚 Is there evidence behind it?
🏥 Is the source trustworthy?
🤔 Could this be misleading or taken out of context?

Remember!

Think critically. Check your sources. Stay informed.
